Mirror’s Edge was a beloved cult game, not least because it was a model of game design. DICE thought through the problems with first-person platformers very, very carefully and the result was a game that, once you mastered it, made you feel like an effortless acrobat. The sequel looks to be taking an “if it ain’t broke…” attitude, and that’s a good thing.
One thing that stands out from this footage is that gorgeous level design. Not only does it look good, it’s easy to read quickly; whatever you can climb or jump on is immediately obvious without the use of big-ass arrow or something. The combat system revisions look good, too; Faith can really beat some ass when she needs to, and if there was one thing frustrating about the first game, it was that you couldn’t even the odds nearly as effectively as you could when you ran.
Sadly, it’ll be a while before we play this; the game’s scheduled to arrive in late February. But this probably gave fans an itch to replay the original, so at least we’ll have that to keep us busy.
