When we last talked about Tetris: The Movie, it seemed unlikely to get made. And yet, you can never guess the vagaries of Hollywood, because Tetris is indeed being turned into a movie. And not a cheap one, either.
Deadline reports that a Chinese studio is paying $80 million to make the movie, which has no plot summary but is reportedly a “sci-fi epic.” It’s aimed at Chinese audiences, but the studio’s representatives are currently at Cannes, seeing who else would be willing to show a movie based on a beloved, yet plotless, video game. Did we mention it’s supposed to be the first movie in a trilogy?
As silly as it sounds, at least one of the team, Lawrence Kasanoff, has some experience translating video games to the silver screen. Back in 1995, Kasanoff served as producer on Mortal Kombat, arguably one of the only good video-game-to-movie transitions. Then again, he also spent years trying to make a movie based entirely around #brands and, well, this was the result. So really, this could go either way.
It’s not clear when this might arrive in the United States, or how. Even if they’ve got an amazing script, there’s still that title for people to get past. Besides, if Disney can turn a dark ride about pirates into an international hit franchise, Tetris deserves a shot.
