I miss 3D platformers. Sure, the return to prominence of 2D platformers has been nice, but I think Mario 64-style 3D platformers are also due another look.
Well, apparently I’m not the only person who thinks that. Playtonic Games, a new studio made up of former Rare developers, who worked on classic Nintendo 64 3D platformers like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, have just announced Yooka-Laylee. Get it? Say it as one word.
Much like Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee will have you controlling an amalgamation of two characters. Yooka the chameleon jumps around and uses his tongue as a grappling hook, and Laylee unleashes sonic attacks and can fly for short distances. Both characters were created by Steve Mayles, the same guy who created Banjo and Kazooie and the modern Rare versions of Donkey Kong and pals.
A Kickstarter for the game will be going up tomorrow. If funded, Yooka-Laylee will be be released on PC, Mac, Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U.
The following news video from IGN features some video footage of the game. While it’s obviously still in an early state, consider me hyped for a good old fashioned 3D collect-a-thon.
