Frictional Games specializes in making gamers terrified. They first came to prominence with the horror game Penumbra: Overture, pioneering a mix of first-person puzzle and survival horror gaming that exploded with Amnesia: The Dark Descent. And now they’re going under the sea with Soma.
Soma takes place in a lab where something horrible has happened. It’s not clear what, exactly, that something horrible is, but there’s a creepy infection sticking itself to humans and robots alike, and the robots are acting less like dispassionate machines and more like people. Unstable, dangerous, angry people. Did we mention you don’t have any weapons? Yep, it’s hide, spot the pattern, and haul ass if you want to live to the end of the game. Whether you live beyond the end of the game… well, you know, this is Frictional we’re talking about.
Anyway, to see me play through, and also to hear me yelp profanities like a little yappy dog with its tail stuck in a door, you can check out the stream on Twitch or down below. We’ll be playing from 2:50 p.m. EST to 4:21 p.m. EST. Join us, won’t you?
UPDATE: And apparently, despite leaving my PS4 on all night, the game still didn’t fully download. Isn’t technology fun? Anyway, initial impressions have been tucked in the comments.
