Borderlands 2 was a massive hit and for excellent reason. It was a fun, well-done FPS that paid off the concept of “Diablo with guns” that made the first one such a hoot. So, obviously Borderlands 3 is coming, right? According to Gearbox, not so much, but the reasons why may surprise you.
Randy Pitchford opened up to Polygon about the franchise, and what else Gearbox is working on. New ideas, for one thing, but for another, they can’t wrap their heads around what Borderlands 3 would even look like:
“We love Borderlands, and we know customers do too. So we will be doing more in Borderlands. But the thing that, when you think of what Borderlands 3 should be… No. We are not developing that right now. We don’t know what that is yet. We can imagine what it must achieve, but we don’t know what it is yet.
For those wondering, “doing more in Borderlands” includes experimenting with new genres, as we can tell by Telltale, of all companies, taking on Borderlands for an adventure game series. Besides, they’ve got plenty to work on: Some of that Borderlands money is going to a new Homeworld game, a new Brothers In Arms game, and a goofy four-player shooter set during World War II.
Really, guys, as long as you’re not planning a sequel to Aliens: Colonial Marines, we’ll take whatever you’ve got. In fact, we’ll pay you not to make one, OK?
