Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has a pretty straightforward pitch; it’s a new sidescrolling Castlevania game, just one with the serial numbers filed off. Created by Koji Igarashi, one of the key creative people behind the later Castlevania games, the idea was to create an old-school action RPG like the series’ beloved PlayStation entries such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. And it appears that was all Igarashi had to say.
Currently, the game’s Kickstarter is sitting at $4.68 million, a new record for a video game on Kickstarter. Fans have already unlocked Wii U and Vita ports, multiple new game modes, multiple soundtracks, three playable characters, and a prequel minigame. If they hit $4.75 million, and they seem likely to, the prequel minigame will come to portables as well.
It’s especially important because this Kickstarter was an attempt by Igarashi to demonstrate there was still fan interest in the style of game he wanted to make. He seems to have rather dramatically proved his point; the only two game-based Kickstarters he currently hasn’t beaten are the Ouya and the Exploding Kittens card game. You have to wonder just how much money the big publishers are leaving on the table by focusing on just a handful of genres; increasingly, it seems to be quite a lot.
