Last month we found out Michael Bay was producing Almanac, a found footage project to be directed by first-timer Dean Isrealite, the cousin of the guy Michael Bay picked to direct his Ninja Turtles remake. At the time we heard Almanac would be “in the vein of Chronicle except with time travel instead of superheroes.” In response, I made the photoshop above and also joked that if you’re going to sell me a found footage, time travel movie called Almanac, it better involve Marty McFly and sports betting. And it’s only found footage because they’re using the shaky-cam as an image stabilizer for Michael J. Fox.
When I said that, I thought it would just be the footnote which eventually gets me fired from my other job, but it turns out it was as prescient as it is tasteless. Bleeding Cool spoke to a source who knows more about Almanac, and it sounds like all of our Gray’s Sports Almanac references were spot on.
The lead character, David, is a smart kid in high school but he’s finding dating hard. He’s drawn to Jessie, the typical popular girl, and decides that he’ll try to attract her by winning the science fair, and the college scholarship that will net him. Bless.
David’s late father was a scientist and so he looks through his Dad’s stuff for ideas – and he finds two things of note. One gives him the ability to time travel… and the other is a sports almanac. Anybody who has seen Back to the Future 2 can guess where this is headed.
Two more of David’s friends travel back through time with him to abuse the almanac. Timelines get messed with, we learn more about David’s Dad’s research and there’s apparently a couple of pretty big twists… one of which I was able to guess, in fact. [Bleeding Cool]
Is the twist that the “typical popular girl” in a Micheal Bay movie turns out to be an imperfect, three-dimensional character portrayed by an actress hired based on acting chops instead of car-washing skills? Because that would be one hell of a twist.
