Big Hero 6 was a rare success with critics and audiences, grossing over $600 million — Disney’s third highest grossing film of all-time — and winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Not surprisingly, this has fueled interest in a sequel, yet directors Chris Williams and Don Hall said a few weeks ago that there are no plans for a sequel. But now one of the voice actors is saying the opposite, perhaps spoiling a big announcement Disney was sitting on.
Genesis Rodriguez, who voices Honey Lemon in Big Hero 6, revealed sequel “rumblings” at a press junket for her newest project, Run All Night. Here’s what she told Screen Rant:
Have they lined you up for a sequel or anything yet?
“There’s rumblings of something else happening. I mean yesterday I just saw that it’s the third most grossing Disney animated feature, so this is huge for them. I doubt that they wouldn’t want to do another one. It was a huge success.”
That’s typically the way they work.
“Right? But they are doing Frozen. So, who knows? Maybe they’ll do something with Big Hero 6.”
What do you do with the number? “Big Hero 6.2”?
“Well, it’s a comic book, so they have so many… It’s a Marvel franchise that Disney adapted. Just like comic books, you could make it a complete different story and the superheroes reunited to attack someone else. So it’s a perfect little setup they got for a sequel if they wanted to.”
On the one hand, it would make total sense to do more with the Big Hero 6 team. On the other hand, it’s ultimately Marvel’s call, and Rodriquez may not be the best source. She also references a Frozen sequel, something that is inexplicably not happening yet. And the “something else” happening with Big Hero 6 may pan out to be a video game, short film, or other media. More importantly, how the hell is there no Frozen sequel? Let’s all just assume we made a cheesy joke about Disney “letting it go” here and we’ll move on.
