Marvel Enlisting Jim Carrey And/Or Adam Sandler Into ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

Apparently Marvel has decided to take its cues from CGI animated movies in voice casting: Both Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler are apparently being courted to voice characters in the movie.

Honestly, it’s a very Hollywood decision. The movie will likely feature at least one CGI character (and we told you people no good would come of Rocket Raccoon, but noooooo, you had to insist the talking animal was awesome), and getting a huge star to do a voice acting role is a relatively cheap way to cram in some star power, and make the character more visible, thus selling more stuffed animals to small children. Even the biggest stars charge a lot less for a job when they can show up in their PJs at noon and run off their lines in a week.

That said, “courting” is not the same thing as “hiring”. Marvel is a lot more likely to wind up going with somebody cheaper and less likely to invoke images of The Majestic or Jack and Jill, even if they’re fairly convinced the movie is a sure thing.

But there’s also a distinct possibility that a comedian last culturally relevant around 2007 will be voicing a CGI raccoon in a Marvel movie in 2014. It will also likely have a catchphrase aimed at children. Really, all we need to do is have the jokes written for it consist entirely of stale pop culture references, and we could have a lawsuit from Dreamworks on our hands.
