Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has a lot of behind-the-scenes drama. As the game inches toward release, we’re starting to get a sense why: Konami has some… interesting ideas for what fans want out of the game.
According to Sony copy and rumor collected by VG 24/7, the game will have microtransactions. Fortunately, they won’t be tied to the part you actually sneak around in, at least not directly. The game has a side quest where you build your Mother Base up, and you can apparently pay for “time-reducing features.”
I’ve got to ask… is Konami even paying attention at all? Microtransactions appear to have a home in some games, like hardcore multiplayer shooters with their Gold Battlepacks and cheap, free-to-play games. But they’re not popular, to put it mildly, and players seem to actively loathe their very presence, even if they never use them. Consider this just another sign that Konami is giving up on gaming for good.
