Pull List: Comics Coming Out 3/13/13

And what’s hitting the stands on Double Thirteensday?

  • DC wraps Before Watchmen: Ozymandias, and has two books about the death of Damien Wayne in the Batfamily, both of which we review and both of which are worth picking up. There’s also more Suicide Squad, Demon Knights, and Keith Giffen’s Threshold
  • Marvel launches both Wolverine and an Ultimate Wolverine mini, and has more X-Men: Legacy, Uncanny Avengers, Thor, and Age of Ultron.
  • Image wraps their Change mini, and has more Nowhere Men, Walking Dead, and End Times of Bram and Ben.
  • Dark Horse wraps R.I.P.D.: City of The Damned, launches Sledgehammer ’44, and has more Star Wars, which if you haven’t been reading you need to start.
  • IDW has more Ghostbusters, High Ways, Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror, and Fever Ridge.
  • And Boom! wraps their first Bravest Warriors mini and launched Paul Scheer’s Aliens Vs. Parker.

Reviews

Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #6

Jae Lee’s artwork has been consistently unique, and Len Wein’s script ends on a high note, but honestly, it doesn’t really feel necessary, or have the emotional or thematic weight of some of the other books in this event. Not bad, but it’s not necessary, either.

Earth 2 Vol. 1

This trade is a good collection of James Robinson’s slow-burn, alternate universe take on the Justice Society of America. DC’s printing is gorgeous as usual, but the book is the real attraction here: If you haven’t had a chance to read it, now’s the perfect time to get started.

Batman #18

Scott Snyder follows on the death of Damien Wayne by returning to Harper, the teenaged hacker he introduced earlier, and having Harper reel in Batman after he goes a bit overboard. While it’s an odd choice for a breather issue after the intense Death of the Family, it’s a good one-off story that gives the death of Robin some more weight, although it’s not the best Batman story this week.

Batman And Robin #18

That belongs to Peter Tomasi’s entirely dialogue-free story, supported strongly by Patrick Gleason’s pencils and Mick Gray’s rich inks, and is easily the best issue DC puts out this week. It’s a vivid exploration of grief, and one of those out of the blue moments that shows Tomasi can knock it out of the park with the best of them.

Green Lantern Corps #18

Peter Tomasi is having a hell of a week. This story, with strong art by Chriscross and inking by Scott Hanna, explores the many, many alternate histories of John Stewart and Yrra. Tomasi really understands what makes Stewart a compelling character and a Green Lantern, and he makes the book a strong character study of Stewart and Yrra both. It makes a good companion piece with Tony Bedard’s take on the many possible histories of Kyle Rayner, and gives the Wrath of The First Lantern crossover a more personal feeling.

Katana #2

Ann Nocenti and Alex Sanchez are turning this book into a very fun story of hand-to-hand combat and corporate intrigue. It’s still finding its feet, a little bit, but Nocenti enjoys writing the book and Sanchez’s art is beautiful.

Sledgehammer ’44 #1

Mike Mignola and John Arcudi wrote this for John Severin to draw, but unfortunately, that didn’t work out. Jason Latour is more than up to the task of illustrating this surprisingly restrained story about giant robots and World War II, however, and his work manages to walk the line between gritty realism and lurid pulp perfectly. If you’re a fan of BPRD, this book should be in your sub folder.

Buddy Cops

It’s a one-shot starring a drunk space policeman demoted to the NYPD, and an android who follows the letter of the law. As fundamentally ridiculous as Nate Cosby’s concept is, he embraces it and runs with it, making everything highly entertaining. Evan Shaner, meanwhile, has a lovely clean style that emphasizes the comedy by grounding it. It’s a funny, funny book and easily the funniest on the stands this week.

Star Wars #3

We loved Brian Wood and Carlos D’Anda’s take on classic Star Wars right from the start, and each issue has only gotten better. This one brings in some romantic complications for Luke, Leia making some tough decisions, and Han and Chewie kicking ass. You really can’t ask for more or better.

Ghost #4

Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Noto deliver a solid take on Dark Horse’s unusual superheroine; it’s a good mix of superhero and horror that does a lot to better explain Ghost and her motivations. Noto in particular delivers a nice, vivid horror book that avoids gore and cliche, making for an engaging book.

Transformers Regeneration One #89

Simon Furman, Andrew Wildman and Stephen Baskerville have a hard job: Emulating Marvel’s run of Transformers from the ’80s. And, as somebody who grew up reading those comics… they nailed it. It’s a pitch perfect homage, and a lot of fun.

TMNT: Donatello One-Shot

Eastman and Laird’s comics were always unique and inventive for their time, and these reprints are a valuable reminder of that. If you want to see what launched the cartoon, it’s hard to go wrong with this.

The High Ways #3

John Byrne’s story of space truckers stumbling across a lengthy and elaborate plot to do, well, to do something, is an interesting piece of space pulp, as far as it goes. But Byrne is a bit too wordy and a bit too unedited, here: It’s not clear what, precisely, is even at stake or what the antagonists of the story are really up to, and there are touches that are campy beyond all belief, like Jimmy Cagney flying a spaceship. It’s a new idea but it feels straight from the early ’80s, for better and for worse. If you’re in the mood for some ’80s cheese, this could fit the bill.

Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror #2

Roger Langridge’s story of Hollywood cults and Nick and Nora Charles started off strong, but this issue hits a high note that turns it into a lovely romp. J. Bone’s art just adds to the fun, with the cartoony style lightening the tone just enough to balance the book. If you’re a Rocketeer fan, this is a great followup to IDW’s previous series.

Fever Ridge #2

Mike Heimos has a good idea for a war comic: Exploring World War II as fought in New Guinea. New Guinea was possibly the worst hellhole in the entire Pacific Theater, and possibly World War II, and ultimately the jungle won, not the Axis or the Allies, as documentaries like the deeply troubling The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On shows.

The problem is that so far, the book lacks focus. This issue is largely a history lesson, albeit one enhanced substantially by Nick Runge’s atmospheric, angular artwork, after a first issue of two stories. It’s worth sticking with the book, but hopefully Heimos will focus a bit more on pacing in the upcoming issues.

Dr. Who Classics #1

There’s nothing essential about these particular reprints, although they’re solid stories from the ’80s. Doctor Who fans will likely enjoy them, but IDW’s ongoing new work is a bit more interesting.

The New Ghostbusters #2

Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening really hit their stride on this book, not least because one of the running themes is ripping on the entire idea of creating a distaff version of a team and stuffing them in sexy outfits. Schoening’s art is very much reminiscent of the ’80s cartoon while still keeping his own style. It’s a solid book, and it’s getting funnier with each issue.

Bloodshot #9

This book has become more enjoyable as it’s gone on, although this issue features Duane Swierczynski taking a turn for the grotesque, a little bit. Still, a solid issue that leads straight into the upcoming Harbinger Wars crossover, and the last panel is particularly chilling bit of business.

Archer And Armstrong #9

And Fred Van Lente ends this book on one hell of a cliffhanger, as well. Also, this has the single best exploration of a man’s need for purpose expressed in its opening pages, in that it happens while engaged in gunplay on golf carts.
