In a weird bit of coincidence, two distinct properties associated with Chris Pine are about to join forces in a major comic crossover event. Star Trek and Green Lantern will combine for The Spectrum Wars, a joint venture between IDW Publishing and DC Comics.
According to CBR, the new title was announced at this weekend’s WonderCon in Anaheim. Mike Johnson is writing the six-issue series, which debuts in July. Angel Hernández serves as the main artist. Since both properties are heavy with science fiction, it wasn’t much of a stretch for Johnson to string the two worlds together into a workable plot:
“Set in Star Trek’s 23rd Century, the balance of the universe will be tested when the Green Lantern Corps’ Power Rings come into the possession of certain Star Trek characters while a dark and powerful evil looms around every corner. Only the combined power of the Green Lantern Corps and the Federation stand any chance of stopping those who worship evil’s might.” (Via)
Two variant covers were distributed to WonderCon attendees. The first is drawn up by Francesco Francavilla:
The second, which makes use of the Star Trek reboot cast (including Pine’s Captain James T. Kirk), is by Gabriel Rodriguez:
Just the idea of the Green Lantern Corps taking on the Klingons (and vice versa) makes me happy.
Look for the first issue on shelves later this summer.
