What’s Michel Gondry Making Next?

A Philip K. Dick novel, what else?

Dick has actually been pretty lucky when it comes to the movies. “Blade Runner”, “Total Recall”, “Minority Report”, and “A Scanner Darkly” are all pretty good, albeit varying degrees of faithful. We do not speak of “Paycheck” or “Next”. But if this actually happens, it’d pair the director of one of the best science fiction movies of the last twenty years (what’d you think “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” was, precisely?) with one of the best science fiction authors’ best book, “Ubik”.

The short of it: a group of people get stuck in time, which is winding backwards. They might be dead already, but something is definitely going around killing them just to make sure. Their only hope seems to be a spray advertised wherever they go called “Ubik”.

OK, it sounds a little ridiculous, but give the book a shot, it’s great.

So, yeah, that’s something to get excited about. There’s no word on whether Gondry will make use of the script Dick wrote for another French filmmaker way back in the ’70s, but Gondry is the kind of guy presumably aware of it, so we’ll see what he chooses to do.
