Watch the rescue of the ‘Back to the Future’ DeLorean

2015 is a big year for “Back to the Future.” The beloved film celebrates 30 years (a “nice round number”) since its release. October 21, 2015 marks the date that Doc and Marty travel to in “Back to the Future Part II.” Great Scott, this is heavy! Join us here as we count down to the festivities on this red letter date in the history of movies.

Fanaticism for “Back to the Future” hasn”t faded in the 30 years since its release. But what has faded is the shine of the DeLorean.

Over the years, the DeLorean driven by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in the beloved film trilogy has fallen into disrepair after sitting in the rain, plagued by souvenir hunters, rats and the elements.

Just when one of the world”s most famous movie cars seemed bound for the junkyard, a restoration team was assembled to return the time machine to its former glory. A team guided by “Back to the Future” writer-producer Bob Gale spent over a year working to get the Hero “A” car (the primary car used in the production of the trilogy) back to the way it was in 1985. The team meticulously obsessed over getting every detail right so it would look just like it did on film, down to the tiniest bolt.

Documentary film “OUTATIME” chronicles the DeLorean”s restoration and will be released later this year. Director Steve Concotelli has been working on the Kickstarter-funded feature length documentary, and a 20-minute featurette version of the doc will be on the 30th anniversary “Back to the Future” Blu-ray and DVD, which will be released on Tuesday, October 20.
