After twenty years, audiences still love Lloyd and Harry.
The belated comedy sequel “Dumb and Dumber To” — which reunites Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as slow-witted pals — grossed $14.2 million on Friday, significantly ahead of holdovers “Interstellar” and “Big Hero 6.”
The Farrelly Brothers-directed comedy will likely earn around $36 million or so for the weekend. The original film opened to $16.3 million way back in 1994, and went on to earn $127 million domestically.
Christopher Nolan's “Interstellar” flew to a decent $8.3 million in its second Friday of release, bringing its domestic total to $76.9 million. It will likely earn $28 million or so by Sunday, putting it in range of the $100 million mark.
Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, the divisive space epic won't come close to the earnings of Nplan's last few films — including “Inception” and the “Dark Knight” films.
Disney's animated “Big Hero 6” continues to play well. It fought its way to $8 million on Friday, bringing its domestic total to $83.6 million.
The new romance “Beyond the Lights” sang to the tune of $2.3 million on Friday. The Relativity release, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker, cost just $7 million to produce and will have already earned a tidy profit by Monday morning.
After six weeks of playing, David Fincher's “Gone Girl” refuses to leave the top 5, picking up another $1.3 million on Friday. Its domestic gross stands at $149.4 million, a record for Fincher. Will Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike sign on for a sequel?
Next week brings us the highly-anticipated “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part I,” which will aim to top “Catching Fire's” staggering opening weekend take of $158 million last year.
