It looks like “Furious 7's” opening weekend was slightly front loaded, but when you've made $143.6 million in just three days, who's complaining?
The latest installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise dipped 31.2% from Friday to Saturday which quashed any dreams of a $150 million+ frame. Trust us when we tell you no one at Universal Pictures or in the “Furious” family is complaining. “Furious 7” blew away “Captain America: Winter Soldier's” $95 million to take the title of largest April opening ever. It also surpassed “The Twilight Saga: New Moon's” $142.8 million for the no. 9 slot on the all-time openings list. Overseas, “Furious 7” earned a monster $240 million for a massive global cume of $384 million.
Withstanding the “Furious” onslaught as well as could be expect was this weekend's no. 2 film, “Home.” The DreamWorks Animation flick dropped 47.4% for another $27.4 million and $95.6 million in just 10 days. “Home” has earned $179.4 million across the world.
The biggest victim of “Furious'” success was “Get Hard.” Dropping to no. 3 slot, the Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart comedy fell a worrisome 61.8% for another $12.9 million and $57 million since opening.
“Cinderella” continued its magical run in fourth with another $10.2 million and $167.2 million to date. Globally, the Walt Disney Studios release has earned $397.2 million and should cross the $400 million mark this week.
“Insurgent” rounded out the top five with a $10 million frame as it crossed the $100 million mark for $103.3 million overall domestic.
Far behind, but still impressive, The Weinstein Company's “Woman in Gold” took in $2 million in just 258 theaters for a more than solid $7,767 per screen. The Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds drama has taken in $2.1 million since opening on Wednesday.
The only new wide release on Friday is 20th Century Fox's “The Longest Ride.”
Weekend actuals are released on Monday.
