Cosplay is the art of dressing up as one of your favorite fictional characters. It can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. But some cosplayers go above and beyond! Every Tuesday, we feature one of these dedicated hobbyists, along with some information about their chosen cosplay. This week in the spotlight is Jennifer from Soylent Cosplay with her insanely realistic Mass Effect creation.
What's your name?
My name is Jennifer and I'm one half of a cosplay pair called Soylent Cosplay.
What made you want to cosplay as this?
I love Mass Effect and I especially loved the Asari as a race; they're just so beautiful, but deadly when they need to be. I had a particular soft spot for Liara T'Soni since the first game, so she was always on my list of dream cosplays. I didn't think it would be possible until I got my first Asari headpiece. I tried it on, and was pleasantly surprised by the results! I'd also seen other cosplayers cosplay Asaris in the past, and it just looked like so much fun!
How long did it take to create the costume?
Approximately…8 months? Though it was really only when I had the free time, so it was on and off during that time. Definitely at least 5 months, though. I'll admit that I probably spent more time on it then I probably needed to, but I really was obsessed with trying to making it as well as I could. Haha…
How much did it cost?
Oh gosh…I actually hadn't really thought about it – probably because I was a bit afraid of what it would add up to. I'd say…approximately $700 to $800?
Do you have favorite comic-con memory from this cosplay?
Well, I haven't been to Comic-Con, but if you mean a convention memory in general? I've only been able to wear her to one convention so far, but it was all such a great experience it's hard to pick a moment! Just having people recognize your character and the work you've put in is really amazing. At PAX we managed to put together quite a large group of Mass Effect cosplayers and it was just such an incredible feeling to be around so many like-minded people who belonged to the same fandom as you and were as dedicated to it as you are. Plus, as corny as this sounds, they were all really nice, so I got to make a lot of new friends.
