Dane DeHaan discusses preparing for ‘Place Beyond the Pines’ and being naked in the Hudson River

NEW YORK – Dane DeHaan has been a busy man as of late. The actor had a movie, “Kill Your Darlings,” at Sundance this year; is one of the stars of Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond the Pines;” and is picking up the mantle of Harry Osborn in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” We recently sat down with him and asked about it all.
As glamorous as the work may sound, not all of it has been easy. With “Pines,” for example, his character is looking for some hard truths and DeHaan has to play some intense scenes opposite Emory Cohen.
The star assured us that “There’s a lot of work that goes behind it; a lot of preparation. But then ultimately on the day, it’s just about dropping all that work and preparation and really fooling yourself into believing what’s happening is what’s actually happening.”
That, however, isn’t always quite enough. Sometimes you also need a hot tub.
One of the scenes in “Kill Your Darlings” has DeHaan naked in the freezing waters of the Hudson River, remaining motionless. The scene took a night to film and the actor had to spend time in a hot tub between takes to stay warm. Was it a difficult experience? As he put it, “I look at it as spending a night with Michael C. Hall in a hot tub, not spending a night naked in the Hudson River.”
As for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” (the below video contains that discussion), while filming had begun when he spoke to him, DeHaan hadn’t actually been in front of the camera yet. Still, he promised us that “the script is really good, really amazing” and that he knows the movie “is going to be something special.”
“The Place Beyond the Pines” opens today and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is scheduled for a May 2, 2014 release. Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the rights to “Kill Your Darlings.”
