Star Wars prequel actor Hayden Christensen recently spoke about his willingness to return to the film series, and while Ewan McGregor has also said he'd be happy to reprise his role as Obi-Wan, he wants to make one thing clear – he's not begging for work. Also, he's not sure why folks get so excited about the franchise.
Parade Magazine spoke with McGregor about his latest film Our Kind of Traitor and, of course, brought up Star Wars and how fans are always asking him if he's going to come back to play Obi-Wan.
“I like the films that I made with George Lucas and I”m happy to be part of the legend of it all, but that”s it with me. I don”t really understand the fanaticism about it,” he told them. “I”m asked by everybody all the time, 'Would you do another one?' and I”ve said, 'Yeah, I”d be happy to,' because I think there”s a film between Episode 3 and Episode 4, which is when Alec Guinness is in the desert.”
I agree with McGregor that there's certainly more Obi-Wan stories to tell and even though I'd prefer to see a Leia film, I'd be really interested to see it McGregor fill in some gaps. And to be honest, Obi-wan's parts of Star Wars: The Clone Wars were always some of my favorites.
But the actor fears him talking about a return to the role as much as he has already makes him look needy.
“But I”ve been asked about it so much now that I”m being criticized for trying to persuade Disney to make this movie. I only responded to people asking me about it, and now it looks like I”m sort of looking for work, which is humiliating,” he told Parade. “I couldn”t care less if it happens, but when Star Wars people ask me if I would do it, the answer is yes, so that”s how I feel about it.”
