The CW officially ordered three new dramas on Thursday afternoon, but the big news is the pick-up we all already new was coming.
The “Flash”/”Arrow” spinoff has officially been ordered to series and after having been called various permutations on “untitled,” it finally has a title: Say hello to “DC's Legends of Tomorrow.”
I'll remind you of the details on “Legends of Tomorrow” in a minute, but The CW also ordered “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Cordon” to series.
Since The CW already has 10+ returning shows on tap for the 2015-2016 season, the network isn't announcing schedule timetables or episode counts yet. We'll see if that news comes at The CW's upfront presentation to advertisers next Thursday.
Let's get details:
“DC's Legends of Tomorrow” focuses on time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter, who has to recruit a rag-tag team of heroes and villains to help prevent an apocalypse that could impact not only Earth, but all of time. YIKES!
The series stars Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Arthur Darvill, Caity Lotz, Ciarra Renee, Franz Drameh, Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller. Note that, for whatever reason, the initial logline has the last two “Flash” veterans listed as “with Dominic Purcell… and Wentworth Miller.” Dunno if that's contractual or what.
“Legends of Tomorrow” will be produced by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg and Sarah Schechter.
If “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” sounds familiar, it's because it was originally ordered to pilot by The CW's corporate sibling Showtime. It was a half-hour pilot at Showtime, but it has become an hour-long at The CW.
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” stars Rachel Bloom, who also executive produces along with Aline Brosh McKenna and Marc Webb. It focuses on a woman who leaves the Manhattan legal rat race to move to West Covina, California for love and happiness. Hmmm… Fair enough! Originally, the pilot was a comedy with musical elements, but we'll see what remains.
CBS Studios produces “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and allows The CW to remain on good footing with the studio, though this pickup comes suggests The CW isn't moving forward with “Cheerleader Death Squad” and “Tales from the Darkside,” it's other CBS Studios pilots.
Finally, “Cordon” is a virus outbreak drama from “Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” producer Julie Plec. It focuses on a CDC team and local police in Atlanta trying to quarantine the city.
David Gyasi (“Interstellar”), Christina Moses (“Starship: Apocalypse,” “Starship: Rising”), Chris Wood (“The Vampire Diaries”), Kristen Gutoskie (“Beaver Falls”), Claudia Black (“The Originals,” “Farscape”), George Young (“Casualty”), Hanna Mangan Lawrence (“Spartacus: War of the Damned”) and Trevor St. John star in the adaptation of a Belgian format.
[“Cordon” is a bad title. I hear it and I think it's a frothy dramedy set at a prestigious cooking school. And perhaps it should be. Not so many people hear the word and think of an enclosure.]
On the drama front, The CW previously picked up “iZombie,” “The 100,” “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Jane the Virgin,” “Supernatural,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals,” “Reign” and “Beauty and the Beast” for the 2015-2016 season and beyond.
