Del Toro additionally told EW about casting the lead voice role of Jim, who becomes the Trollhunter, defender of the good trolls. Anton Yelchin lent his voice to the character, and it turns out it”s one of the final performances he completed before his death this June.

Yelchin had a “warm, accessible quality” that del Toro imagined for Jim, he told EW. “That simple goodness and beautiful soul came through every time [Yelchin read].”

Trollhunters, based on the middle-grade book of the same name del Toro wrote with Daniel Kraus, debuts on Netflix this December.
