Guillermo Del Toro is out to prove than bigger is indeed better with the upcoming monster mash “Pacific Rim.”
The brand new full-length trailer gives us our best look yet at the film’s towering beasties and their robotic counterparts.
When giant monsters known as Kaiju attack, massive robots called Jaegers are devised and two unlikely heroes (Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi make a stand. Idris Elba gets the stirring, “ID4”-style speech, and Charlie Day provides the comic relief.
The slim plot appears to be mostly an excuse for genre film mastermind del Toro (“Hellboy,” “Pan’s Labyrinth”) to play with the ultimate big screen toy collection.
The trailer expands on the previous teaser, adding much more action and a little bit more character development and dialogue.
Del Toro regular Ron Perlman also appears, but the film’s “stars” are the Kaiju and Jaegers, whose sheer size seem to dwarf other recent big screen giants, notably those seen in the “Transformers” movies. Plus, you can actually tell what’s going on, which is always a plus.
Your move, Godzilla.
“Pacific Rim” opens July 12.
