Coldplay isn”t exactly the band I expect to make my heart melt, but melt it into gooey mush it did.
At a concert in New Jersey this weekend, Chris Martin made his son”s dream come true, making our day too. The Coldplay frontman”s 10-year-old son had requested his dad play a song from their favorite movie, Back to the Future.
Papa Martin played not one but two songs from the 1985 classic – with Michael J. Fox. During the show”s encore, the actor joined Coldplay for two 1950s hit songs that his character plays in Back to the Future: the Penguins” “Earth Angel” and Chuck Berry”s “Johnny B. Goode.”

At the 2:30 mark, you can watch Martin introduce Fox “from the best movie of all time” (hear! hear!) and listen to the crowd go wild as Marty McFly himself struts onto the stage playing a Gibson Les Paul with a sunburst finish – that”s the look of the guitar that Back to the Future“s art department originally selected for the Enchantment Under the Sea scene, before they ended up going with a red Gibson ES-345. So you could say Fox finally got to play “Johnny B. Goode” the way he was originally meant to. He has reprised his performance of the Chuck Berry song at various events over the years, but usually with a guitar that looks like the one that actually appeared in the movie.
