NBC has released the first official imagine of the new star of “Constantine” and he looks precious little like Keanu Reeves.
The latest adaptation of the popular DC Comics occult series features Matt Ryan, who you might know from “Layer Cake” and “Torchwood,” but you don't know as the quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons. Don't make that mistake!
John Constantine first debuted as a supporting character in DC's “Swamp Thing” series in 1985 and went on to be the centerpiece of his own “Hellblazer” and “Constantine” lines. When he isn't being played by Reeves, the character is a former Liverpool con-man who now helps defend our world against supernatural beasties and whatnot.
David S. Goyer is producing the new “Constantine” and cracked the story with Daniel Cerone (“Dexter”), who wrote the script. Neil Marshall (“Game of Thrones,” “The Descent”) is directing the pilot, a Warner Brothers TV production.
“I”ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985. This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics” covers,” Goyer blurbs. “Fans old and new are going to be in for a treat.”
Francis Lawrence directed the 2005 film adaptation, in which Reeves looked very little like he'd just sprung directly from the cover of the comics. However, while there's some perception of “Constantine” as a box office disappointment, it actually took in a fairly reasonable $230 million worldwide, not that there was much clamoring for a sequel.
