The Kickstarter campaign for a new season of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” is rolling along, with the $2 million goal more than met with 10 days remaining. Creator Joel Hodgson has started introducing the cast of the revival, and you'll probably recognize a few names.
Hodgson announced the most well-known name so far on Monday: Comedian and frequent Twitter ranter Patton Oswalt is going to be TV's Son of TV's Frank.
Oswalt is a last-minute addition to the cast. According to Hodgson, he and Oswalt emailed back and forth a bit after the Kickstarter campaign began, with Hodgson offering him a guest writing spot and then an on-camera role (Oswalt's response: “OH MY GOD”). He'll join previously announced cast members Felicia Day, who will play Kinga, the daughter of original series baddie Dr. Clayton Forrester (and the granddaughter of Pearl Forrester), Jonah Ray, who will be their host/victim, and Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn, who will voice Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, respectively.
It should be noted that the announcement doesn't seem to be sitting well with Frank Conniff, who portrayed TV's Frank. He tweeted that he heard about Oswalt playing his son at the same time as everyone else. Trace Beaulieu, who played Dr. Forrester, has also tweeted seemingly bitter sentiments about not being involved in the new series. Hodgson has said campaign updates that anyone from the original cast who “wants to be involved creatively” in the new series is “welcome back,” but that doesn't seem very likely as things currently stand.
