Pokémon Go is an overwhelming success for Nintendo. Since the game was launched just one week ago, it”s been downloaded more than 15 million times. As a result, Nintendo”s market cap has increased more than $9 billion. The smart phone app has led to its share of unexpected outcomes too – mostly bumps and bruises from people walking into things because they”re not paying attention. But then there are some other, more unbelievable results from people playing the game. We”ve compiled a few of our favorites for you:
Man caught cheating on his girlfriend: Evan Scribner, a New York City resident, told the NY Post that because of his love for Pikachu, his girlfriend (now ex-girlfriend) found out he was making sexy time with a lady caller just a few miles from his home. You see there”s a geolocation device that makes the game work, so… well… let”s let Scribner explain the rest: “She saw that I had caught a Pokémon while at my ex”s house… She found out last night at my house and hasn”t contacted me since then.” Love in the modern world.
Woman finds dead body: A woman in central Wyoming was playing the game innocently enough when she came across a terrible sight. Shayla Wiggens, 19, found the unidentified man in the Wind River, about 270 miles northwest of Cheyenne. According to The Ranger, Wiggens was outside playing the game when she “saw the body floating face down” about five feet from shore. Foul play is not suspected.
Man fired after ranting about not being able to play: Sonny Truyen, an Australian consultant was in Singapore for work, when he decided he wanted to play the new, hot game. The only problem, it”s not available there yet. So, according to the IBT, Truyen went on a tirade on Facebook in which he called Singapore “a piece of f–ling s–t country.” After the CEO of the company he was working for got wind of this, Truyen got the hook. Now, it seems he”ll have a lot more time to search for Squirtle and friends.
Missouri gamers lured, robbed. Suspects in custody: Four men were arrested on July 10 after allegedly robbing Pokémon Go players. According to O”Fallon, MO police, “The way we believe it was used is you can add a beacon to a pokestop to lure more players. Apparently they were using the app to locate people standing around in the middle of a parking lot or whatever other location they were in.”
Man meets woman, may have found love: John Seo will have a heck of a story to tell his kids if this turns into something serious. The 25-year-old New Jersey resident got a date because of the Nintendo game. He told the Wall Street Journal that he met a girl while out playing the game and then, “I just asked her out toward the end… I”ve never met a stranger and felt so connected. It's like you shared the same childhood.” Video games, what can”t they do?
Remember, Pokémon Go has only been seven days. Just wait for the weird stories to come when it”s been out a month or two.
