Recap: ‘The Voice’ Tuesday – Top 10 Results

After a stellar episode last night, it”s time for America to send two more contestants off of “The Voice”. Last night, I predicted Sylvia Yacoub and Cody Belew would go home, but it”s really a toss-up at this point. Even if the journey to this point has been overcrowded and sometimes confusing, it”s hard to argue with the talent on display at this point in the show. I worry that this means the next cycle will yield teams of 24, but let”s worry about that in 2013. For now, let”s get through tonight”s padded results episode.
8:00 p.m. Just like last week, the bottom two vote getters will be going home, regardless of team. That means Blake Shelton or Christina Aguilera might see his or her team completely wiped out tonight. Imagine if Aguilera has to endure the rest of the season without anyone to coach? That”s Must See TV.
8:03 p.m. Carson Daly tells us that Melanie Martinez and Cassadee Pope both ended the voting period in the Top 10 of iTunes last night, multiplying each vote for them by ten. So, I”m guessing both are safe tonight. (Also, I”m delightfully shocked that Martinez ended up with the second-highest download total. Wouldn”t have predicted that at all.)
8:04 p.m. It”s time for Team Xtina, including its coach, to perform Aguilera”s “Let There Be Love”. By the end of “The Voice”, we will see every song from “Lotus” performed, won”t we? I understand the watching the coaches perform their own material is part of “The Voice” package, but after last night, I”d like to see as many of the remaining ten as much as possible while they are still around.
8:12 p.m. Before we get to the first two saves, Daly interviews the coaches. It”s as hard-hitting as you would imagine. Aguilera has a real Cyndi Lauper thing going on tonight. Also, Daly really hates “Gangnam Style,” it seems. Why did Psy ever do the former “TRL” host?
8:16 p.m. This week”s “Voice Confessional” concerns the things we don”t know about the contestants and coaches. Sylvia”s dance moves are kind of adorable. The rest of this is rather unmemorable, aside from Belew admitting that he enjoys when people fall. I shouldn”t have laughed at that. Yet, I did.
8:18 p.m. Time for the first two saves. Daly briefly interviews Belew about his “Crazy In Love” performance last night, which might be a signal about his chances to move on. If he”s going to stay, he won”t learn until later: The first two continuing into the Elite Eight are Nicholas David and Cassadee Pope. No great surprises there.
8:25 p.m. Carson Daly is giving us hashtags that we can use to vote for a performance later in tonight”s episode. Where”s Christina Milian? Isn”t this her entire job?
8:26 p.m. Rascal Flatts appears to perform “Changed”. Belew and Pope join them halfway through the song. Wouldn”t it be something if Pope turns into the next Carrie Underwood after this season? Last night saw the birth of a potential country superstar, which seems like a more lucrative career than “the next Avril Lavigne”.
8:29 p.m. Immediately after the performance, it”s time for another two names to be revealed. Daly asks Amanda Brown the single most important thing that Adam Levine has taught her. “That would be to ‘be myself”,” she replies. Oh good. Because no one else on earth could have taught her that, I guess. In any case, we learn that Dez Duron and Cody Belew have been saved. Well, I”m surprised, but not upset. Now I”m thinking Terry McDermott may be on the chopping block in addition to Yacoub. America voted for flash, and Terry was as meat-and-potatoes as they came last night. But we”ll see.
8:36 p.m. “I was just getting my ‘bam bam” on,” says Christina Milian. I can never unhear that, ever. She interviews Rascal Flatts and the already-saved contestants. I”m sure words were spoken, but all I heard was white noise. NBC”s audio was fine. I just intentionally blacked out.
8:37 p.m. Still remaining: Hunte, Brown, Martinez, Yacoub, McDermott, and Keith. I don”t see how the first two go home. Martinez”s iTunes position probably saved her. Which means it comes down to the last three.
8:38 p.m. In the meantime, it”s a Team Adam performance, as the four perform Queen”s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. What an odd track to choose. It”s a fun number, but it”s also incredibly laid-back. It”s hardly a number to jump start the crowd. All four have distinctive voices, but together they blend together about as well as orange juice and chocolate syrup. Also? It has to suck for all three to still be worried about going home and have to perform anyways. These three are professionals, no doubt.
8:41 p.m. Daly segues us into another round of saves. Rather than talk to the remaining six, Daly instead asks Aguilera about Duron”s chances going forward. Random. But let”s get down to business: the next two moving on to sing another day are Melanie Martinez and…a commercial break. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? What fresh hell is this? I want to hug all the contestants. This is cruel and unusual punishment.
8:48 p.m. Back from commercial break, we don”t get the next save, but a combo performance from Team Blake and Team Xtina. America selected them via hashtag to perform Pat Benatar”s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”. Pope and Duron perform with glee, having already been saved. Yacoub still seems enthused, but McDermott acts as if he”s already seen the writing on the wall.
8:51 p.m. You know the drill by now. The remaining five return with only nine minutes left in the program. Are we about to just run right through these?
8:52 p.m. Nope: just one name will be announced right now. And that name is Terry McDermott. Well, I”m wrong again in my predictions tonight. And happily so. I would say that we know the final two at this point (Yacoub and Keith), but my radar has been off all night.
8:56 p.m. The final four are still onstage, awaiting the final verdict. The first person saved by audience voting is Trevin Hunte. Once again, Green acts like a proud, profane father when Hunte”s is announced. If Hunte doesn”t win, Green will definitely sign him.
8:58 p.m. We get an insanely awkward moment when Daly tries to ask Yacoub a question, but Sylvia thinks that he”s announced that she”s been saved. Oh God. I want to crawl in a hole and die. After brief interviews with all three remaining singers, we learn that the final person saved is Amanda Brown. Poor Yacoub. Poor Keith as well, but that was a mortifying moment completely engendered by Daly”s boneheaded approach.
Did the right two go home? Are there any clear favorites at this point in the competition? Sound off below!
