I'll be honest: I always found the original Ghostface mask (based on Edvard Munch's famous “Scream” paintings) a little silly. That said, it fit nicely with the jokey, tongue-in-cheek nature of the original film series. MTV's new small-screen revival of the franchise, however, has gone with a more overtly scary look for the new incarnation (as revealed by EW):
So why the new version? Here's executive producer Jaime Paglia to explain:
“The [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren”t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience.”
And if the mask reminds you of Michael Myers' white “William Shatner” visage, you wouldn't be far off:
“It evokes some of the Jason hockey mask and the white Michael Myers mask, but it”s still first and foremost evocative of the Scream mask,” adds executive producer Jill Blotevogel. “It”s sort of a reinvention while also paying homage.”
As for original director Wes Craven (now an executive producer on the TV series):
“The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction. It also ties into the story, which I won”t give away.”
