Shailene Woodley’s character, Hazel, offers a beautiful sentiment at the opening of the new trailer for “The Fault in our Stars.” She states that you can sugarcoat sad stories, offering a version where “Nothing is too messed up that can’t be fixed with a Peter Gabriel song.” It is a lovely thought and if “Solsbury Hill” doesn’t instantly start playing in your mind when she says it, you may have to get out to more movies.
Sadly, right after offering this cinematic reality, she tells us that it’s not the truth. We then get a chance to really understand what “The Fault in our Stars” is all about.
Directed by Josh Boone and starring Woodley and Ansel Elgort, “The Fault in our Stars” is the tale of two teens who meet in a cancer support group and fall in love. But, based on what Hazel tells us, it’s clear that things are going to be far too messed up to be fixed by the soothing sounds of Peter Gabriel. In short, you can get ready for heartbreak and the rest of the trailer offers just that. There are moments of what seem to be true happiness and growth and then scenes from a visit to a hospital emergency room.
It is tragic and upsetting and reminds us all that even though Woodley is also starring in “Divergent” this March, she hasn’t left behind the sort of dramatic efforts that led her to a Golden Globe nomination with “The Descendants.”
