Syfy’s new ‘Van Helsing’ series is looking a lot like ‘Blade’

While Universal's new Van Helsing film project seems to be taking cues from Mad Max, Syfy's small-screen version seems to be taking its inspiration from Blade. Take a look at the first teaser for the series starring Kelly Overton as the gender-swapped vampire hunter.

You may remember Overton from her time playing, funny enough, a werewolf on True Blood. This new series is from the producers of Fargo and Hell on Wheels with Neil LaBute as its showrunner. Now, why am I thinking Blade? Well that character has a very unique place in vampire lore, being a vampire-human hybrid. This new Van, aka Vanessa, Helsing is also unique.

Vanessa Helsing awakens from a coma to discover the world has been overtaken by vampires. She discovers that her blood can turn vampires back to human, meaning she's the last hope for the human race. As she searches for her daughter, she must fend off the vampires who see her as a threat to their very existence.

And well, this first teaser trailer just feels so much like the Blade movies to me too.

If you're interested in checking out more of Van Helsing, Syfy has posted a five-minute scene on their site. She certainly doesn't seem to have perfect vampire fighting abilities from the get-go which is probably a good thing. I'll give it a shot. But considering Marvel brought in Blade's daughter to the comics, I'd still love to see her get a chance on the big screen.
