You just knew this one wasn't going to stay dead.
Lionsgate may be rebooting the Saw franchise more than five years after the alleged final installment — 2010's Saw 3D — hit theaters, according to a new report over at Bloody Disgusting. The horror site claims that screenwriters Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row) have been tapped by the studio to pen the eighth installment of the mega-successful franchise, which is currently titled Saw: Legacy.
Though the series burned itself out creatively by the time Saw 3D rolled around, it was an enormous moneymaker for the studio, grossing over $870 million worldwide over seven films. It was only a matter of time before they went back to this particular well.
My two cents: Saw is one of the franchises that truly deserved to be slapped with the “torture porn” moniker, with its philosophical underpinnings merely serving as a ruse; its real purpose, of course, was to package gruesome displays of human suffering as entertainment. Assuming that will continue to be the case with any new installments, but will anyone still care?
