Lena Dunham’s appearance at the Democratic convention arrived with some advance fanfare. After all, Dunham enjoys stirring up some controversy, and her strong feminist views also lead her in bold directions. Along with America Ferrera, the Girls actress stood onstage and immediately began to mock Donald Trump. Now, Elizabeth Banks did so earlier in the evening by imitating his bombastic Republican convention entrance. But Dunham and Ferrera took things past the humorous and into the critical.
Dunham began the joint presentation by alluding to comments Trump would likely make about her physique. She identified herself in a forthright manner: “I’m Lena Dunham, and according to Donald Trump, my body is probably like a two.” Ferrera added, “I’m America Ferrera, and according to Donald Trump, I’m probably a rapist.” The two concluded how Trump would “Make America Hate Again.” They dropped dove into a discussion of reproductive rights and equal pay for equal work, but the mood was kept fairly light and aimed pointedly at their Republican nominee target.
The duo ended with a “Love Trumps Hate” conclusion, which was one of Cory Booker’s main points on the convention’s first evening.
