Hillary Clinton debuted a new anti-Donald Trump ad on Thursday, and once again, she’s letting the real-estate mogul do the talking. The spot — titled “The Truth About Hillary” — uses footage of Trump speaking highly of Hillary and her husband, former President Bill Clinton.
Whereas Clinton’s last ad, “Role Models,” focused on how Trump’s rhetoric might negatively affect children, “The Truth About Hillary” has the feel of a traditional “positive” ad, with one twist: Clinton’s opponent is the one endorsing her. The ad opens with ominous music and text: “Donald Trump reveals the truth about Hillary Clinton.” It then cuts to a years-old Trump interview with Fox News. “Hillary Clinton I think is a terrific woman,” he says. The backing track grinds to a halt and is replaced by a swing number. “I know her very well, and I know her husband very well, and I like them both,” Trump says.
The ad goes on to use even more flattering remarks about Hillary from Trump, including “Hillary is smart, tough, and a very nice person” and “I know Hillary and I think she’d make a great president.” At the end of the ad the screen reads, “Donald Trump: occasionally right.”
Trump’s comments in the new Clinton spot run contrary to his campaign’s consistent attacks on the Clintons, including an anti-Bill Clinton video Trump posted in May that uses audio snippets from a woman who accused the then-attorney general of Arkansas of sexual assault in 1978.
