Stephen Colbert Unveils The Almost Limitless Drafts Of Trump’s Termination Letter To James Comey

Stephen Colbert held off on covering the termination of James Comey by President Trump until tonight and it was pretty much worth the wait. Not only did Colbert do a deep dive with his monologue, even sending Anderson Cooper’s rolling eyes on a journey that would make a hobbit jealous, but he opened the show by sharing some early drafts of Trump’s letter to former FBI director James Comey. He likely wouldn’t have the spine to deliver these letters himself either, but they might’ve been better than the final product.

The middle paragraph in Trump’s letter was a point of interest for many folks and seems to be where most of the drafts get hung up. He just can’t seem to not bring up Russia, like some sort of orange-tinted Basil Fawlty trying not to mention the war. In reality, he should’ve just followed the Billy Beane method and kept it all business. People would still be harping about Russia, but it wouldn’t look like such a ploy. It also might’ve scored him those points that Colbert said he was going for, from all sides. Heck, Van Jones might’ve called him the true president again and called the decision to fire Comey a “tough but necessary” one.

Instead, the Nixon library is dunking on Trump and everybody is looking for the big moment where the administration crumbles.
