The UCLA website has been crashing due to high traffic during this incident, but for now, CNBC reports that two victims were killed with a gunman at large. CNN notes that armed officers are patrolling the campus of 40,000 students, and the urban setting of the campus presents more than the usual amount of difficulties in locating a suspect. The FBI has also responded to the scene where the search is ongoing, and law enforcement is now clearing buildings on a floor-by-floor basis.
The LAPD confirms the incident with an official tweet and asks people to avoid the area surrounding Engineering Building #4.

During a live press conference, LAPD Captain Andy Neiman held out one request of students and faculty: “The message to everybody on campus is to shelter in place.”
UPDATE – 3:10pm EST: A CNN live report indicates that the lockdown is being lifted, and authorities have determined that this was a murder-suicide: “We believe the situation is contained … campus is now safe.”
Currently, the university is holding a final week of spring classes before finals. Student Teddi Mattox tells CNN that this was “absolutely the worst time of the day for anything to happen.”
