Let’s be clear — Colin Cowherd is a McGregor/Rousey noob. Much like The Ultimate Fighter noobs before them, Colin is into MMA thanks to Ronda and Conor and has the blinders on regarding anything else (check his Google results under “Cowherd MMA”). They’re all he really talks about in the world of MMA. Probably because they move the needle.
He’s also someone who says a lot of stuff with no repercussions if he’s wrong, and he’s wrong fairly often. This formula is leading us to yet another new rumor, this time with Cowherd claiming the McGregor/Mayweather fight is happening on the weekend of September 17.
“My intel is Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is going to happen. It changed late last week… got a call then somebody else sent me something yesterday and Saturday… we’ve booked rooms in Vegas.”
Of course, he has no proof of the fight going down, and he didn’t go so far as to post his booked hotel receipts, so all of this needs to be taken at face value, especially when considering the facts. Conor McGregor is under contract with the UFC. He can’t just get up and box Floyd Mayweather, especially because he’s been eyeing a return to the Octagon around the UFC 202 timeframe, which is likely to happen in August or September.
We know that UFC President Dana White recently met with Conor and his one-time UFC 200 opponent Nate Diaz, with the meetings involving Conor going much better than Nate, but there’s no reason whatsoever to think that Dana was meeting with Conor to make the Floyd fight happen. And why would they?
It seems like the only people who would make real money from it are Floyd and Conor. Even if the UFC co-promoted, they could just book Conor in a UFC fight and make way more money. Especially considering Conor is out of his league boxing Mayweather. It does nothing for the UFC to see Conor, their featherweight champion, go from losing to Nate Diaz to losing to Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match.
But hey, maybe Cowherd will be right, and we’ll all have to eat crow. Stranger things have happened. And it would be a lot of fun to see the bout if it ends up coming true. Save the date, just in case.
