If you regularly use Reddit, or are just in close Internet proximity to a Redditor, you’ve probably seen a few links from Imgur. It’s an image sharing site, popular on Reddit because it’s generally fairly ethically run and easy to use. And since it sees 100 million users a month, it’s worth money… just not nearly as much as Yahoo! apparently intends to pay for it.
To be fair, there’s not a number on paper anyone has seen. On the other hand, assuming that Yahoo! would pay nine figures for a business that essentially replicates a business it already owns isn’t much of a stretch since that’s already happened.
Our guess is Yahoo would have to offer something between $100 million and $500 million. But who knows in a world where Snapchat supposedly turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook. Acquisition talks fall apart all the time, and so could discussions between Imgur and Yahoo. It’s unclear if Imgur wants to sell.
On the one hand, this is pretty much completely insane, not least because you’d think Yahoo!, which essentially buys anything it can afford, would be out of money by now. But, apparently, not so much!
That said, while Imgur is a successful website, and apparently even, >GASP<, profitable, it’s not worth nine figures. Really, the big question is why Yahoo! can’t just try to update the toys it already has… but we guess that makes too much sense.
