Say what you want about 4Chan and its content, but you can’t deny the impact it’s had on the web and web culture as a whole. From helping spread the popularity of memes to introducing the world to a bear that wants to sleep with children, its tentacles are many and far-reaching.
Today comes news that the site’s administrator and founder, Christopher ‘moot’ Poole will be stepping down as the site’s sole administrator after an illustrious and sometimes infamous 11 year run. From 4Chan:
…as today I’m retiring as 4chan’s administrator. From a user’s perspective, nothing should change. A few senior volunteers—including 4chan’s lead developer, managing moderator, and server administrator—have stepped up to ensure a smooth transition over the coming weeks.
I’ll need time away to decompress and reflect, but I look forward to one day returning to 4chan as its Admin Emeritus or just another Anonymous, and also writing more about my experience running 4chan on my personal blog.
Today I announced my retirement from @4chan, a community I founded at the age of 15 and have served for 11.5 years: https://t.co/jEMsDf5nfz

From Ted Talks to various other projects, ‘moot’ is quite a presence in the web world. And even though we don’t know what he has in mind next, safe to say it will probably further impact this twisted, troll-filled universe he inadvertently helped shape.
