Shay, our anti-hero for Assassin’s Creed Rogue, has flipped sides and joined the Templars. And it honestly looks like he’s got excellent reason, if the launch trailer is any indication.
We’ve seen before that something the Assassins try to pull off goes horribly wrong, as in “blows up a whole town” wrong, which is a pretty bad shade of wrong to be painted with. But apparently it’s even uglier than we think, which highlights something about this series has bothered me for a while.
Nobody’s saying the Templars are great, but, come on, you’ve basically been playing a mass murderer in all these games. I went back and checked my stats for Assassin’s Creed IV, and my most recent playthrough, where I barely bothered with the main quest, I still killed over 500 people, and in some pretty horrible ways. Most of the people you kill are basically employees who die for the crime of being near your target and armed. There’s a little moral ambiguity there, and it’s a brilliant idea to focus on that. Even if blowing up a whole town isn’t a terribly subtle way to go about it.
Unfortunately, you’d better have an older system to see how this plays out. Assassin’s Creed Rogue arrives tomorrow exclusively on PS3 and Xbox 360.
