Getting amnesia and then suddenly remembering who you were before that event is a plot to many B movies. This time, however, it’s real, and it happened in Canada. A man there was “found” after he went missing almost 30 years ago by suddenly remembering who he was.
According to the CBC, Edgar Latulip disappeared in 1986, after leaving his Ontario home without his medication. He was 21, but apparently had the mental capacity of a 12-year-old. He traveled by bus 120 kilometers from where he lived, and then fell and hit his head, which severely limited his memory. So he created a new identity.
Then, in January he approached a social worker and told her that he vaguely remembered being someone else. The social worker found his missing persons report and called the police.
Local police said that this type of resolution is rare:
“When someone goes missing for an extended period of time, they don’t want to be found and they’re off the grid and we don’t find them,” Gavin said. “Or the other option, sadly, is sometimes people are deceased. I’ve never heard of something like this where someone’s memory has come back and their identity is recovered.”
Life, sometimes, you know?
