The world of comic books may have lost one of its greatest artists last week. If you’ve kept up with the latest issues of Marvel’s X-Men and The Avengers comic book properties, chances are you’ve seen the work of Norman Lee. The Massachusetts native worked primarily as an inker for Marvel and DC Comics.
According to NBC New York, Lee went missing Thursday morning when he and his wife were vacationing on Grand Cayman. The two went snorkeling, but only one came back:
Investigators in Grand Cayman say Jan made it back to the beach, but Norman did not.
Volunteer divers have been searching in strong currents near the Reef Resort hotel, but so far, they have turned up no sign.
Despite strong currents and inclement weather, divers kept searching. But on late Saturday, after two and a half days of endless dive and rescue operations, Cayman 27 reported authorities were giving up:
Searches for Norman Lee have been stood down. According to police, “The currents in that area are strong and it is unlikely that we will make any recovery at this stage.”
Police Chief Inspector Brad Ebanks said, “We put all assets available to us, both law enforcement and privately owned. We thank all those who assisted us in this time of need. Unfortunately we were unable to find or recover Mr. Lee.”
Given the rough character of the currents in that section of beach, authorities fear Lee may never be found.
