It’s a great week of comics this week, with a whole bunch of new #1s and some great follow-up issues. Here’s an overview of what’s on the stands from DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Valiant, IDW and Dynamite this week.
<!–pagetitle:The Unwritten: Apocalypse #1–>
This launch of Unwritten‘s second volume, which will end the series, is actually ideal for new readers while simultaneously showing what makes Mike Carey and Peter Gross such a killer creative team. As Tom Taylor slowly comes back to himself, he travels through several stories that Carey perfectly nails the tone of while Gross cleverly evokes using classic art while putting his own spin on it. There’s not a better demonstration of why this book has such a rabid following, and it’s a perfect issue in of itself. Highly recommended, and here’s a few pages to see what we mean.
<!–pagetitle:Scribblenauts Unmasked #1–>
Yes, the 3DS game is getting a comic. And it’s actually a pretty adorable one, as Josh Elder gets a few affectionate shots in towards DC lore, and Adam Archer and Ben Bates capture the art style and humor of the game quite effectively. It’s a kids book, but it’s a good one. Recommended.
<!–pagetitle:All-New Invaders #1–>
James Robinson does what he does so well; bring Golden Age comics into the modern era. Being paired with Steve Pugh helps as well, and this book largely focuses on the original Human Torch, to its benefit. It’s a small, tight team and it’s got some real promise. Worth picking up if you’re a fan of Robinson or Golden Age stuff.
<!–pagetitle:George Romero’s Empire Of The Dead: Act One #1–>
Romero and Alex Maleev is really all most nerds will need to hear to buy this, despite it being yet another damn zombie book, but this is actually not bad. The twist at the end is going to be controversial, to put it mildly, and this book isn’t really breaking new ground just yet. But it’s interesting, if nothing else.
<!–pagetitle:Deadly Class #1–>
Rick Remender and Wesley Craig deliver a book about a high school for assassins, set in 1987. Honestly, the book is at its strongest when it’s dealing with our hero, Marcus, struggling with being homeless; when a chase scene materializes, it’s not terribly clear why, and the book reverts to the somewhat cheesy in a few moments: Really, another tattooed woman with a katana? Craig’s art is beautiful, but so far the concept isn’t as arresting as you’d think with Remender behind the wheel, especially since Jimmie Robinson already delivered a much funnier and more concise version of this concept with his Five Weapons book, the next issue of which is actually coming out next week from the same publisher! Hopefully there’s a bit more to this book than just ’80s nostalgia, especially since Remender is doing such great work in other books.
<!–pagetitle:ElfQuest: The Final Quest #1–>
Wendy and Richard Pini finally wrap up their beloved fantasy comic with this final miniseries. It’s a solid story, if one that relies overly on your having read every last issue of ElfQuest, but it’s got a surprisingly hard edge even after all these years. Worth picking up if you’re looking for a fantasy comic.
<!–pagetitle:Judge Dredd: Mega-City Two #1–>
Douglas Wolk and Ulises Farinas imagine what Mega-City Two (i.e. Los Angeles) is like in Judge Dredd’s world. Farinas’ whimsical style, seen in Catalyst Comix is oddly well-suited to Dredd, and Wolk manages to get some pretty funny moments out of the culture clash between the hard-assed Dredd and the starstruck world he finds himself stranded in. Worth picking up for Dredd fans; here’s a preview if you’re on the fence.
<!–pagetitle:X-Files/Ghostbusters #1–>
Erik Burnham and Salvador Navarro combine the Lone Gunman and the Ghostbusters to hilarious effect. Let’s just say the Lone Gunmen are completely convinced the Ghostbusters are frauds, and discover the hard way that this isn’t the case. A highly amusing crossover issue and worth picking up for fans of either franchise.
<!–pagetitle:My Little Pony: Friends Forever #1–>
Look, it’s a number one, so I review it. Besides, Alex De Campi (behind the much more adult Grindhouse over at Dark Horse) and Carla Speed McNeil manage to make a book for kids while fitting in a lot for adults, too; if you pay attention, Evan Dorkin’s Milk And Cheese make a cameo. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s pretty fun for kids, and worth it for fans of the show big and small.
Herik Hanna and Bruno Bessadi have been reading too many Mark Millar comics. Essentially, this follows Dead End, a thoroughly unreformed hit-man, as he kills people essentially because he can. Which would be fine if this book had much of a sense of humor or the main character was anything other than a douchebag, but honestly, what’s supposed to be a nasty laugh just doesn’t click. Bessadi is essentially stuck trying to make the book funny and although the art’s quite good, he simply doesn’t have anything to work with. It might be fun for fans of books starring completely irredeemable characters, but otherwise, you can safely skip it.
<!–pagetitle:Hacktivist #1–>
What if Mark Zuckerberg’s seeming amoral greed was all a front, and he was using his abilities and cash for the good of mankind? That’s the basic concept of this book, which, despite Alyssa Milano’s name on it, is written by Jack Lanzing and Colin Kelly, and actually does a fairly good job discussing a fairly interesting concept. It’s a little too Live Free Or Die Hard with the computer science, but Lanzing and Kelly perfectly nail Silicon Valley’s self-involved attitude. It’s a low-key start, and Marcus To and Ian Herring’s art could stand to have a little more personality, but it’s got some real promise.
<!–pagetitle:Harley Quinn #2–>
This book still feels a bit forced and uneven in tone; throwing Poison Ivy into the mix doesn’t make Harley’s ongoing hitman troubles any more compelling. On the other hand, Chad Hardin may have found a new calling in drawing adorable puppies. Just keep the kids away from this one.
<!–pagetitle:Eternal Warrior #5–>
Greg Pak and Robert Gill take their “modern barbarian” title to a pretty hardcore high-fantasy place. At the end of the last arc, the Eternal Warrior killed the gods. Needless to say, that doesn’t end well for humanity; cut to 4001 A.D., where this book picks up, and things aren’t going well for humanity. This new arc is a great place to pick up the book, and you really should: Pak and Gill are putting out some great comics. Highly recommended, and here’s a short preview to see what you’re in for.
<!–pagetitle:Captain Midnight #7–>
This is a solid superhero fight in a book that’s more interesting as part of a larger collection of stories. But, hey, who doesn’t enjoy a good superhero fight? If you want some two-fisted action, this is the book to go for.
<!–pagetitle:Mass Effect: Foundation #7–>
Jack gets her turn in the spotlight in a one-shot about how she wound up where she is in Mass Effect 2. It’s nothing essential, but it’s fun if you’re a fan of the game, and it’s got some solid action.
<!–pagetitle:Hawkeye #16–>
Yes, Hawkeye is being published out of order, but Matt Fraction and Annie Wu are always welcome, and this riff on the history of the Beach Boys is, if not a classic, still a pretty sweet and slightly melancholy story that will particularly appeal to music fans.
<!–pagetitle:Mind MGMT #18–>
Matt Kindt’s powerhouse story of psychics and espionage continues with a one-shot story about a little girl who can talk to the animals… and the animals who want to spend time with her. Kindt’s trademark graphic design and wit is all over this book, as usual; one spread, in particular, deliberately evokes Richard Scarry books. In other words, it’s superb and highly recommended.
<!–pagetitle:The Massive #19–>
A new arc begins with Callum Israel trying to resolve some old business… and accidentally stumbling across some answers he didn’t expect to find in a post-apocalyptic Europe that’s rapidly going to hell. This is the start of a new arc and as such, is a great jumping-on point for a superb book. Highly recommended.
<!–pagetitle:X-O Manowar #21–>
Robert Venditti fleshes out Aric a bit more and explains what defines the man, beyond the armor he no longer wears. Of course, as Aric himself notes, the armor is a part of him… but that may be more literal than even he realizes. This is a start to a new arc, and this is a good time to get on board, especially since Aric is about to be the all-American guy in armor.
<!–pagetitle:Conan The Barbarian #24–>
Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli continue their adaptation of The Song of Belit with an issue at once gorily violent and surprisingly melancholy. Conan may be of iron sinew, but even the vicious Cimmerian can feel heartbreak. Highly recommended.
<!–pagetitle:Justice League #27–>
This Forever Evil tie-in is mostly about Cyborg getting a sleek new body and the Doom Patrol… well, they’re the Doom Patrol, we all know how this ends. Mostly this is mad scientist continuity porn: T.O. Morrow, Niles Caulder, and Will Magnus all make appearances in this book. A lot of fun for DC fans, but really more for those following Forever Evil.
