Remember when we reported on the Florida Family Association having the vapors over characters of the same gender in a video game tastefully implied to be doing it?
Apparently EA got thousands of letters about it. Which is worrisome, because normally when a corporation gets thousands of letters from morons, they tend to bow to the will of morons.
Not in this case, though. Take it away, Jeff Brown, VP of corporate communications:
“Every one of EA’s games includes ESRB content descriptors so it’s hard to believe anyone is surprised by the content. This isn’t about protecting children, it’s about political harassment… EA has not been pressured by any groups to include LGBT characters in our games. However, we have met with LBGT groups and sponsored industry forums to discuss content and harassment of players in online forums. In short, we do put options for same-sex relationships in our games; we don’t tolerate hate speech on our forums,”
That last refers to these people apparently showing up on EA’s forums, ranting about gays and dropping gay slurs repeatedly, and then whining about getting banned. The letters also include the hilariously empty threat of a boycott.
And that’s really the thing: none of these people actually play video games. Hell, we’ll bet most of them have never even seen “Star Wars”. But it is nice to see a major corporation laugh in the face of stupidity.
