Dialling 911 has sort of a magical aura to it. Hit those three numbers in the proper pattern and you’ll be connected to a caring soul on the other end that’ll hustle hard to make sure your emergency gets the proper care it needs. The only tricky thing is that one might seem like an emergency to you, might not be one to your 911 dispatcher. (Or maybe you’re just being a dummy about it!) For example, did you know that 911 dispatchers might not consider you (delightful wonderful intriguing you!) to be using their service properly if you call them up because you’re bored? Well, there’s always someone that doesn’t know.
28-year-old Florida man Michael Gilman was arrested on Saturday morning for ringing up 911 five times in five hours to talk about “Adolf Hitler and Jews.” Police reports indicate that Gilman was initially asked not to abuse the emergency service, but the DeLand man allegedly ignored the request to trudge on with his questionable brand of reducing his boredom. Said boredom was likely chucked out the window when the cops showed up to investigate the 911 tie-up and (according to the police report) Gilman went into hiding mode.
The police say that Gilman admitted he was talking to 911 because he was bored, but it has also been noted that the man allegedly cited being poor and unable to vote as his emergency. He is said to have asked the dispatcher to remove people from their homes in the name of “serve and protect” and is also alleged to have “reported” an emergency in the White House. Gilman was charged with misuse of the 911 system and has since been released from custody.
