Our minds were blown this morning by a hand-carved storage unit which Nerdcore nicknamed “Glitch Furniture”. It was made by Ferruccio Laviani, an architect working for furniture maker Fratelli Boffi. The one-of-a-kind piece, titled Good Vibrations, was displayed at their 2013 Furniture Exhibition. Check this sucker out:
As cool as it looks, their pretentious press release was almost enough to make me hate it.
Echoes of faraway places and Oriental elements are glimpsed in the “disorienting” design of this storage unit, which seems to have been “deformed” by a strong jolt or by swaying movements. Although it appears to depart from the aesthetics of the past, in fact it draws upon ancient knowledge in the use of carving and fine wood workmanship. The appeal of this extraordinary piece of furniture lies in its ability to overturn and question classical stylistic principles such as purity, cleanness and symmetry, while evoking a comforting feeling of deja-vù and a sort of primitiveness, matched by unquestionable craftsmanship.
Damn it, ad copywriters. Can’t you just let cool things be cool? Do you have to act like an art professor desperately clawing for tenure all the time? No, this carved piece of wood won’t overturn our gestalts and paradigm shift our heuristics or whatever stupid thing you’re repeating this year. The picture of the storage unit already blew my mind, but your buzzword diarrhea just undid some of it. Now I’m going to have to watch this parody video to re-blow my mind.
MIND= BLOWN.
