Adolf Hitler-brand ice cream cones are on sale in India, and predictably, people are really upset about it.
Pictures of Hitler Ice Cream Cones, which prominently feature a picture of the Führer himself, have been making their way around the internet. The label features either a picture of scowling Adolf Hitler in his military regalia or an almost comical illustration of Hitler in a red bow tie and top hat, which has a large red swastika on top.

Due to a lack of education in India regarding Hitler and the Holocaust, Hitler Ice Cream Cones are not an anomaly. According to the Daily Mail, India has a number of pubs and restaurants themed around Adolf Hitler, and Indians are generally not offended by it. Now that pictures are starting to circulate on social media, however, people from around the world are calling for a re-branding, particularly from Germany:
One spectator in Berlin, said: ‘There is taste and there is tastelessness. The people of India should be made aware of the terrible crimes committed by him.’
German newspaper Bild labelled the ice cream cones a ‘macabre publicity stunt’, while several Twitter users branded them ‘tasteless!’
Is it a publicity stunt or a lack of awareness? A publicity stunt makes a lot more sense because even if someone had no knowledge of Adolf Hitler, he doesn’t exactly scream “ice cream mascot.” He has that stern face and the thin mustache, and the more cartoon-y version with the swastika top hat and bow tie is still an odd choice to promote ice cream cones. Is Hitler Ice Cream Cones marketing to skin-heads, the uninformed, or people who just love a weird novelty? If this isn’t a publicity stunt, the people behind Hitler Ice Cream Cones probably should have picked a safer mascot, like a clown or a wonky-eyed Mickey Mouse knock-off.
