Did you enjoy Hot Tub Time Machine but found yourself plaintively screaming “but then what happened” at the end? Could you not get enough of a comedic take on time travel movies in which three friends get a second chance regarding some bad decisions in their past thanks to some sort of *looks directly at camera* hot tub time machine? Well, formerly-bankrupt studio MGM is trying to put together a sequel to Hot Tub Time Machine, the last movie they made before going into bankruptcy.
The company is in what insiders characterize as “exploratory talks” with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke to reprise their roles for the follow-up. Corddry could end up being involved in fashioning a script with Steve Pink, the director of the original who is in talks to return to direct the sequel. John Cusack, who also starred in the original, is not involved at this point. [THR]
THR adds that, if the deal comes together (big if), they’ll fast track it. To be fair, Hot Tub Time Machine was enjoyable and it wasn’t the reason for MGM’s bankruptcy. The movie made $50 million in theaters against a $36M budget, then turned a large profit on home entertainment sales. As for what may have led to their financial difficulties and makes a Hot Tub Time Machine sequel sound like a necessary endeavour, we can only speculate….
