Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, and Andy Serkis Make It Official.

No, they didn’t get married. (Although how awesome could the theme invitations be?)  Both THR and Deadline are reporting that Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis have signed on to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Gollum in The Hobbit.  Finally.  In other casting news, we reported last week that Elijah Wood was in talks to reprise his role as Frodo and we reported last month that Cate Blanchett might return as Galadriel.  Neither character was in the book, but the newest official press release confirms both of them been cast.  We hope there’s room for Spaghetti Cat in the roster, even if only as a stunt double. Scratch that, especially as a stunt double.  Spaghetti Cat jumping away from an explosion at the last second would be adorable.

Offers are currently out for Orlando Bloom to return as Legolas, Ian Holm to cameo as an older Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman is playing the lead Bilbo), and for metal rock god Christopher Lee to return as Saruman the White.  None of them have officially signed yet.

Ian McKellen posted about his casting on his official site, ending his post with, “I am happy to say I start filming in Wellington on February 21 2011.” [emphasis mine]  Looking at that page I also learned Geocities lives on, just at a different domain.  Keep the dream alive, Ian.
