Do you live in fear of an eventual alien invasion of earth? Well, buck up, aliens knocking on our door might not be all bad — aside from providing lots of cool explosions to gawk at, it turns out an alien invasion may also save the world economy.
Wars have traditionally boosted the economy, and those were just petty human vs. human wars — a human vs. aliens war could really get things sizzling. But hey, don’t take it from me, here’s what Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman has to say on the subject…
“If you actually look at what took us out of the Great Depression, it was Europe’s entry into World War II and the U.S. build-up that began in advance. So if we could get something that could cause the government to say, ‘Oh, never mind those budget things; let’s just spend and do a bunch of stuff.’ So my fake threat from space aliens is the other route. I’ve been proposing that.”
As you may have picked up from that quote, Krugman doesn’t even think the invasion has to be real. A hoax would work just as well. Actually, a hoax would probably be preferable — all the economic growth in the world doesn’t count for much when you’re facing real aliens who decide to go and wipe out all human life on the planet.
So yes, the economy is in such a sad state that Nobel Prize winners are pitching fake alien invasions as the best solution. Happy Monday!
