It was fifty-eight years ago today that Rosa Parks refused to change seats on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, effectively ending racism forever. At least that’s what the Republican National Committee seems to believe via this ill-advised Twitter post.
The GOP meant well with their tweet, aiming to pay respect to the late Civil Rights icon, but fell wide of the mark and directly into the lap of a ravenous Internet community that found the end of racism to be shocking news.
They reacted accordingly:
And this ended up spawning the hashtag #RacismEndedWhen, a treasure trove of tweets. I’ve collected the best so far, but hit the link to keep up to date.
For my money, racism ended when Will Smith fought that giant spider death machine and saved the railroad in 1999. History will show I am correct.
